My climbing buddy and I were returning down the Crow River on a wet and wild day after scouting Mt Rolleston out for a possible winter ascent route.
Below us were 2 trampers, packs overladen with metal camera boxes, exhausted and struggling to cross the fast rising river.
We helped them back down the valley to safer ground. They were amateur filmmakers just arrived from England. I carried their tripod and large heavy camera case back to their car, and gratefully accepted their offer of thanks "to teach me how to shoot a movie." From them I learnt the basic skills of 16mm filming over time in Christchurch and up in the Arthurs Pass National Park.
I was only 15 years of age. Those skills ignited my passion for filming and started me on a professional full time career as a cameraman. I never got to climb Mt Rolleston.
